About Us

Southern Comfort Animal Rescue, Inc. ("SoCo Rescue") is 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that rescues and rehomes abused, unwanted and abandoned companion animals.

Southern Comfort was founded in 2001 in Savannah, Georgia, to provide shelter and find temporary foster or permanent homes for pets left behind when troops in nearby Ft. Stewart's 3rd Infantry Division shipped out to Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2006, the organization moved to Glenwood, Georgia and then in 2018 a property was purchased in Tarrytown, Georgia.  Southern Comfort fills a critical need in the rual south.   The area is impoverished and lacks any animal control or shelters for unwanted animals.  As a result, there are many stray dogs and puppies that are abandoned on a daily basis.

Upon intake, all animals are quarantined for 2 weeks.  All animals are treated for acute medical conditions, vaccinated, spayed or neutered if older than 6 months before being placed in carefully screened forever homes.

Once a month, our Freedom Ride bus leaves Tarrytown, GA and heads to Tractor Supply in Ringoes, NJ or Dogs & Cats Rule in Pennington, NJ to hold an Adoption Event for pre-approved applicants.  Nothing is more heartwarming than watching our rescue dogs go to their forever homes!

Southern Comfort is a "no-kill" rescue and only euthanizes in cases of irremediable suffering or vicious and dangerous animals.

We also work to raise public awareness of the plight of homeless animals and promote the benefits of spaying/neutering and heartworm preventatives through community outreach and education.
