Adoption Policies and Fees
Southern Comfort Animal Rescue is licensed and inspected through the Georgia Department of Agriculture.  We take in the homeless, abandoned and sick/injured dogs and nurture them back to adoptable status.  We are a non-profit organization that survives on donations from adopters and the general public.
Adoption Fee
Our adoption fee helps cover the cost for veterinary services and other needed care in order for your new pet to be adopted. The adoption fee includes:

  • Spay/neuter as required by law for all shelter animal adoptions (6 months)
  • Adult DHLPP (yearly) vaccine or 3-stage puppy vaccine
  • Heartworm test and monthly heartworm preventative while in our care
  • Flea/tick preventatives
  • Rabies: one year vaccination with certificate provided
  • General worming
  • Intestinal parasite screening
  • Microchip

Adoption Fees:

  • Neutered or spayed adult pups/dogs:  $450
  • Puppies not yet spayed or neutered:  *$400
    • * plus $50 refundable deposit with proof puppy of spaying/neutering

Our mission is to find good homes for all the dogs that come into our rescue.  Please understand that as a non-profit organization, we can only afford the basic vet care for our dogs.  We will always strive to make sure an adoptable dog is as healthy as can be.  Donations and/or our own out-of-pocket money is used to treat all animals.

Adoption Process
Since we are a licensed rescue by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, there are a few guidelines we must follow:

  • We obtain an adoption application from anyone seeking to adopt. Thorough completion of each section will expedite the review process.  All applications are reviewed by our SoCo Rescue team.  Applications must be approved before meeting the adoptable pets.
  • Potential adopters with another dog are required to bring that dog for a meet and greet to ensure that the dogs will be able to get along.  Sometimes this takes time but an initial meeting sets the stage for a gradual introduction.
  • A pre-adoption visit to your home may be required.  At times, an approved acting agent for Southern Comfort may make the home visit along with, the dog being considered for adoption.  This will give both the adopter and the dog an opportunity to see how well it responds to its potential new surroundings.

At the time of adoption, you will be asked to sign an "Adoption Agreement," which basically states you are not adopting a dog for any illegal purposes and will endeavor to give the dog the best home possible.  SoCo Rescue does follow up after the adoption, to make sure that all is going well with the animal in their new home.

Return Policy
We know that sometimes the match just isn't there.  If the adoption does not work out, we ask that you return the dog to us rather than pass it on or, even worse, turn it into another shelter or animal control.  If the dog is returned within fourteen (14) days, a refund of the adoption fee (less 20% for administration cost) can be made or, in most cases, the adopter can try another dog.  Donations which are above and beyond the adoption fee cannot be refunded.

After the Adoption
After you adopt, we are available if you have any questions or concerns.  We love to get updates and especially photos!  People and families who adopted from us become part of the SoCo family and many keep in contact, allowing us to cherish the path a particular dog's life has taken.  We can also advise you in effective treatments, medications, etc., that may save you money.  We will also be happy to refer you to a vet, trainer, groomer or boarding facility if we are familiar with those providers in your area.
