On a hot July afternoon a woman who had been relaxing at a nearby river watched in horror as a man simply abandoned Ruby and her litter of pups in the parking lot area. The pups were less than a week old and Ruby, herself, was very malnourished, thin and heavily infested with fleas. But Ruby’s story, so far, has been much happier.

With all of her pups now adopted into homes, Ruby is also in much better condition. Not only has she regained her weight and now protected against fleas, Ruby has made a lot of friends at SoCo, both human and canine. Her friendly, loving personality makes her very easy to get attached to and a great candidate as a family pet.

While Ruby was spay and received an update on all of her vaccines on Nov. 9, she did test positive for heart worms. We started her on a monthly preventative as soon as she came to us and will continue to do so (referred to as the “Slow Kill” method of treating heart worms) until other treatment options are started. Despite her positive status, Ruby is so deserving of a new home where she can receive the love that she obviously didn’t receive from her former owner.
